Is your resolution for the new year to stick to your diet and finally reach your goal weight? Do you want to know how you can go about improving your chances of remaining consistent with your efforts so that you can live a life that is healthy and happy? If so, these five tips will help you to remain on top of your diet.
First of all, you need to have a health plan in place. Your diet efforts need to include a maintenance plan that you can easily transition to once you have reached your goal weight. Otherwise, your efforts will be thwarted and you will find yourself in the same trap once again.
Secondly, know what you are going to do in social situations before they arise. If you wait until an hour before going out with friends to figure it out, you are more likely to toss your diet out the window and instead focus on having a good time. While there is nothing wrong with an occasional indulgence, it is easy to fall into old habits.
The third thing that you need to do is something that many dieters fail to consider. That is to approach your weight loss efforts from several different angles. While eating healthy foods and getting enough exercise is certainly essential to losing weight, you need more than that to free yourself from the destructive cycle associated with yo-yo dieting.
Your diet should also have a mental, emotional and spiritual component. If you have emotional baggage or negative tapes playing through your head all of the time, it will continue to control your inner peace. See a therapist, join a support group or find another avenue for releasing that negativity that is holding you back.
Speaking of exercise, the fourth tip is to find ones that you enjoy and to shake things up frequently. If you hate going to the gym, walking or any other activity, you will find excuses to avoid doing it. However, if you opt for exercises that you enjoy, it will be an activity that you begin to look forward to each day.
As for shaking things up, review your routine regularly and change out one or two days of your exercises. For instance, perhaps you are currently walking three days each week and taking yoga the other four. After a few months, switch out one of each for rock climbing, Pilates or whatever other courses you find at your local fitness center.
The fifth tip is to be nice to yourself. There will be times when you don’t stick to the plan. Don’t allow one indulgence to become an excuse to drop the whole diet. Don’t beat yourself up for it. Instead, accept it and move on.
If you remember these simple tips during 2018, you will find it much easier to stay on top of your weight loss efforts and to feel good about yourself. You deserve it!
